Digital Microscopy Core Resources

Microscopes

  • Zeiss AxioImager Microscope:
    • Upright microscope for wide field differential interference contrast (DIC), polarized light and fluorescence microscopy
    • Color camera for immunohistochemical (IHC) imaging and monochrome camera for sensitive fluorescence imaging
    • Controlled by Zeiss AxioVision software
    • Objectives: 5x, 10x, 20x, 40x oil, 63x oil, 100x oil
    • Fluorescent filters: DIC, DAPI, CFP, GFP, YFP, DsRed, TexRed, Cy5
  • Zeiss AxioObserver Z1 Microscope:
    • Inverted microscope for DIC and fluorescence microscopy of cell cultures in small dishes and multi-well plates
    • Heated stage insert for live cell time-lapse imaging
    • Controlled by Zeiss AxioVision software
    • Objectives: 2.5x, 10x, 20x, 40x oil, 63x oil
    • Fluorescent filters: DIC, DAPI, GFP, DsRed, PI, Cy5
  • Zeiss LSM 880 Confocal Microscope with Airyscan:
    • Laser scanning confocal light microscope for fluorescence and differential interference contrast microscopy
    • Heated stage insert for live cell time-lapse imaging
    • Controlled by Zeiss ZEN 2 software
    • Objectives: 10x, 20x, 40x oil, 63x water, 63x oil, 100x oil
    • Excitation lasers (nm): 405, 458, 488, 514, 561, 594, 633
  • Zeiss ELYRA S1 Super-Resolution Microscope:
    • Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) and localization microscopy (PALM/STORM)

      TEM Sample Preparation Equipment
  • Leica EMPACT2/AFS2:
    • Automated high pressure freezing and freeze substitution for electron microscope sample preparation
  • Leica Ultracut 7 Microtome with Cryo-attachment:
    • Electronic controlled microtome for sectioning plastic embedded and cryofrozen samples for electron microscopy
    • Diatome diamond knives for ultra thin plastic and cryo sections
    • Glass knife for cutting tomography sections
  • FEI Vitrobot:
    • Electronic controlled plunge freezing of samples for electron microscopy

Fees and Terms of Service

  • Availability:
    • The Digital Microscopy Core is a shared research facility available to all investigators in the state of Arkansas.
    • The facility is accessible to trained users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Training and technical assistance is available 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with prior scheduling.
    • Access to scheduling and sample submission through iLab core management
  • Scheduling:
    • Trained users may reserve time using the online scheduling.
    • Training and technical assistance scheduled with technician approval.
    • Priority for reserving the microscopes is given to BRIN/INBRE students and the six laboratories known as “SIG” users.
    • Other users may reserve instruments on a first come, first serve basis when priority users are not scheduled.
    • Failing to arrive or call within 20 minutes of their scheduled reservation, the reserved time will be forfeited
  • TEM Sample processing:
    • EM sample submission done through iLab request for services.
    • Limited to 48 hour prior notice with arranged exceptions
  • Fees: Current fees can be viewed here.
  • Acknowledgement: All users agree to acknowledge use of the Digital Microscopy Core in scholarly work and to provide a copy of published work.
