Director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) invites applications and nominations for a collaborative leader to serve as the next Director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine and Attending Veterinarian. This is a full-time faculty appointment in the College of Medicine at a rank commensurate with the experience and academic achievement of the selected candidate for the position. The successful candidate will be responsible for division leadership and administration, clinical assessments, facility operations, ongoing training and forecasting growth of the research enterprise. The successful candidate must work closely with all research stakeholders including principal investigators, research associates, and the office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

About the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine

The Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) is administratively centralized with a current staff of 21 members. There are three main animal housing areas on campus comprising approximately 30,000 sq. ft. DLAM works with the Office of Research Compliance and the IACUC office to manage the Animal Care and Use Program for UAMS. Additionally, DLAM provides veterinary oversight to ACRI (Arkansas Children’s Research Institute), and compliance responsibilities are closely connected between UAMS and ACRI in that they share the same IACUC. ACRI has excellent large animal capabilities and surgery space along with approximately 40,000 sq. feet of additional space for animal housing and research. UAMS has approximately 200 animal use protocols held by about 100 investigators.

UAMS has been continuously AAALAC accredited since 1973 and was recently granted full and continued accreditation following its May 2019 tri-annual site visit. UAMS has an assurance statement with OLAW and is registered with the USDA. UAMS has a strong animal care and use program with shared responsibilities between the compliance office, the IACUC, DLAM and the research community.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership in mapping a strategic plan to accomplish the research support mission of DLAM
  • Provide oversight for the welfare, and preventive and clinical care, of all research animals
  • Provide consultation/training for faculty, graduate students, and research staff on veterinary care and regulatory/compliance issues
  • Provide veterinary support to campus researchers in protocol development and planning
  • Provide technical support to the research community
  • Lead, manage and train husbandry staff
  • Manage the operation of the animal facilities. This includes maintenance of equipment, installation of new equipment, coordination of construction projects and developing grant proposals for forecasted projects.
  • Provide guidance to campus leadership in planning for space issues associated with the projected growth and expansion of the research endeavor.
  • Provide leadership during the transition to electronic billing and IACUC protocols
  • Ensure financial integrity in the costing of all services, per diems and other fee-for-service items
  • Work with the Compliance office on all issues associated with animal research including federal, state and institutional regulations, policies and guidelines.
  • Ensure that all standards are being met to maintain an AAALAC-accredited program
  • Advise the Institutional Official and or Vice Chancellor for Research on all matters related to animal-based research
  • Foster constructive relationship around research with administrators, faculty, staff, students and other constituencies

Candidate Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

  • DVM degree from an AVMA accredited college or ECFVG licensure; ACLAM (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine) Diplomat
  • License to practice in at least one state (gaining an Arkansas license as required)
  • USDA accredited or the ability to obtain it within 6 months
  • 5 years of progressive laboratory animal experience involving a variety of species
  • 3 years of supervisory experience, development and performance management of other veterinary staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Good organizational skills having the ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously.
