Responsible Conduct of Research Training

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) require all federally funded trainees of specific programs to receive instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). Once the training is complete, the training requirement is fulfilled for a period of four years. The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) and the College of Medicine have collaborated with the Graduate School to meet these federal requirements.

NIH requires trainees to receive eight hours of face-to-face instruction. This notice applies to the following programs: D43, D71, F05, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F37, F38, K01, K02, K05, K07, K08, K12, K18, K22, K23, K24, K25, K26, K30, K99/R00, KL1, KL2, R25, R36, T15, T32, T34, T35, T36, T37, T90/R90, TL1, TU2, and U2R.

Currently, two options are available:

  1. A Scientific Communications (SC) course will be offered to all federally funded trainees in order to meet federal requirements. The Scientific Communications course is a one-year course with many sessions on various topics. A list of six sessions per semester have been identified and scheduled to meet the needs of the Responsible Conduct of Research training requirement. (See list below.) Each session will be one hour in length; therefore, a total of eight sessions must be completed in order to comply with federal regulations. These will be live classes held in the BM II Rayford Auditorium. The Office of Research Integrity will track and maintain records of all sessions completed by UAMS federally funded trainees.
  2. The UAMS Translational Research Institute (TRI) has developed a RCR course that takes place over four 2-hour sessions throughout the year. For more information on this program, contact Paul Duguid (PDuguid@uams.edu)
