To create a new cage/activate cage card:
- Take a pre-printed reserve card with the correct PI, AUP # and account # from your box in the animal room.
- For weaning (white cards):
a. Fill out perforated strip located at the top of the card.
b. Required fields for activation are:
i. Circle “Weaning”.
ii. Date of cage creation.
iii. Number of animals birthed.
iv. Optional: number of animals weaned, number of animals culled.
c. If multiple cages are created, only count “number of animals birthed” ONCE. This number will be subtracted from your Animal Use Protocol.
d. Tear off perforated strip. - For separation (i.e. fighting, creating a breeding card or hazard card)
a. If creating a new breeder cage, take a blue reserve card.
b. If creating a biohazard cage (NOT CHEMICAL), take an orange reserve card.
c. If creating a new cage that is not a breeder cage or biohazard cage, take a white card.
d. Fill out perforated strip located at the top of the reserve card.
e. Required fields for activation are:
i. Circle “Separation”.
ii. Date of cage creation
iii. Number of animals in cage
f. These animals will not be subtracted from the approved animal number of the AUP.
g. Tear off the perforated strip. - Place perforated strip in the “ACTIVATION” box located in each animal facility/floor.
To deactivate a cage card/remove cage from census:
- Write date of deactivation at the top of the cage card to the left or right of the bar code.
- Place second perforated strip or entire cage card into the “DEACTIVATION” box in each animal facility.
- Cards/strips in the box without a date will be deactivated on the date collected by DLAM.
- If a cage is not scanned for 3 consecutive scanning events, the card will be automatically deactivated by the system.
