Grant Writing Skill Development Series

Format

The UAMS NIDA T32 training program and the UAMS Office of Science Communication (SciComm) have developed an interactive, discussion-based, hands-on approach to grant writing skill development. Generalizable skill development will focus on writing competitive NIH R mechanism grant proposals (and pilot awards in a similar format as a prelude to these kinds of proposals). Depending on the needs and goals of the training cohort, additional elective sessions may be added to cover writing effective individual training grant proposals (i.e., F and K awards). Emphasis will be placed on writing for the reviewer.

Agenda

Course Discussion Topics (Sessions 1-6)

 Topic 1 (Zielinski): Grantsmanship Basics

Topic 2 (T32 Faculty): NIH & Pilot Grants: Charting Your Course in the T32

Topic 3 (T32 Faculty): Developing your conceptual model, research questions, and hypotheses

Topic 4 (T32 Faculty): Writing Key Components: Significance, Innovation, & Approach

Topic 5 (T32 Faculty): Budgets and Timelines

Topic 6 (SciCom): Science and storytelling

SciCom Workshop Meetings (Sessions 7-9)

Workshop meetings will focus on writing an effective Specific Aims page: hands-on instruction and mentored development, and will incorporate a mock review format (see “Course Project and Mock Study Section” below) to familiarize trainees with the back-and-forth discussion process of study section panels charged to assess the scientific merit of your proposal.

Workshop 1 (SciCom): Specific Aims

Workshop 2 (SciCom): Mock Study Section, Part 1

Workshop 2 (SciCom): Mock Study Section, Part 2

Course Wrap-Up (Sessions 10)

Seminar series wrap up and planning next steps.
