Research Experience
I trained as a medical sociologist. I began my career looking at the complex etiology of substance use disorders and published several papers on the intersection of social and psychological factors in the development of problem substance use. Later, I became interested in health services research and began to investigate predictors of treatment engagement and outcomes for substance use disorders. In addition to this line of research, I simultaneously developed research interests in the diffusion of innovation in mental health and primary care settings.
I have studied and published manuscripts primarily on:
- adaptation and implementation of evidence-based practices in mental health settings.
- the broader area of perceived need, treatment utilization, and outcomes in mental health/substance use disorders.
Recently, I have been developing formative evaluation methods for intervention development and research designs for hybrid effectiveness-implementation trials. The National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute of Mental Health, the United States Department of Defense and the the United States Department of Veterans Affairs have funded me to develop and test a range of facilitation strategies designed to support the uptake and sustainment of evidence-based practices.
In 2014, I became director of the Center for Implementation Research at UAMS, a joint entity between the Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine. The Center is devoted to developing and testing implementation strategies across a wide range of service contexts, assisting with the implementation of practices within UAMS clinics and community practices, and training the next generation of implementation scientists.
