Research Experience
I received my doctorate in zoology (cell and molecular biology) from the University of Maryland. I received postdoctoral training in the Neuroimmunology Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, National Institutes of Health. My work at the National Institutes of Health focused on neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders with a focus on multiple sclerosis. I joined the faculty at UAMS in 1996 where I have continued my research on multiple sclerosis. More recently, in collaboration with Cindy Kane, Ph.D., at UAMS, my research has focused on the role of alcohol-induced neuroinflammation in driving neurodegeneration. These studies are highly relevant to developmental disorders including fetal alcohol spectrum disorders as well as alcohol use disorders and alcohol addiction in adolescents and adults. My research has been steadily funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and private agencies.
