The Development Enhancement Awards for Proposals (DEAP) program provides funds to address comments or needed revisions for new/established faculty members from all UAMS colleges who have received a score on an unsuccessful proposal submitted to a foundation or federal agency. DEAP program grants are intended to help investigators obtain additional data needed to respond directly to reviewers’ comments to increase a revised application’s competitiveness. DEAP program funding is strictly limited to strengthening the reapplication of a scored proposal and the revised application must be submitted within 12 months of receiving reviewers’ comments.
All DEAP award recipients must submit a final report on the outcome of the resubmitted grant, as well as a list of pertinent publications/submitted grant applications. Acknowledgment of the DEAP as a funding source in publications and annual reports is also required.
Budget: Applicants may request up to $50,000 to reapply for external grants with a budget of $200,000 in annual direct cost or higher; and up to $25,000 for external grants with a budget of less than $200,000 annual direct cost. Funds must be spent within 12 months post-award.
Deadlines: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications will be reviewed within two months after submission.
The DEAP application should be comprised of the following documents (please compile into one document):
a) Specific Aims and Research Plan from the previously submitted application
b) Score and Reviews from the submitted application
c) A detailed plan explaining how the DEAP funds will be used to address key weaknesses raised by the reviewers (max 2 pages)
d) A detailed budget and budget justification for the use of the DEAP funds that match the plan outlined in “c” (max 2 pages; No faculty salaries are allowed)
e) Current biographical sketches for the PI and co-PIs in NIH format
f) Current and pending support (including intramural and in-kind support) in NIH format. Include a description of the relationship of support to the current application.
g) A pledge to submit a revised application or a new application related to the prior submission (within 12 months of completing additional work covered by DEAP award funds).
Review Criteria:
- Does the proposed plan address one or more key issues raised by the reviewers and, If successful, significantly increase the likelihood of funding a resubmission?
- Does the plan adequately describe how the DEAP funds will be used to respond to reviewer comments?
- Is the budget appropriate and justified?
