For Principal Investigators:
- All NIH institutes have a Diversity Supplement Program. Please review the list of grant types found in PA-23-189, and reach out to the institute-specific project officer to confirm eligibility and understand the institute’s diversity priorities.
- The parent grant must have >1 year of funding left at the time of award (generally, at least 2 years), not including a no-cost extension period, and the candidate cannot currently be paid on the grant for which you are requesting a supplement.
- Grant deadlines vary by NIH institutes
- It provides an opportunity to receive additional funding while supporting outstanding individuals to work on your project.
- It has a high success rate (often >50%).
- It shows a commitment to diversity in your research project.
- It is a short review period at NIH.
- It is quickly processed because full IRB review is likely not required.
- It is a gateway to further NIH funding opportunities.
In addition to salary support for the trainee, Diversity Supplements may provide up to 5 years of funding, which includes additional research funds ($3,000-$10,000 per year), tuition, stipend, and health insurance for doctoral students, postdocs, and early-career faculty.
Candidates at the following career levels from diverse backgrounds are eligible, including those from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences:
- Students (from High School to Master’s Degree Holders)
- Graduate (Predoctoral) and Health Professional Students
- Individuals in Postdoctoral Training
- Investigators Developing Independent Research Careers
