We know the research community regularly refers to the HIPAA Research administrative guide policy while preparing and carrying out human subject research studies. We want to tell you about the newly posted, updated administrative guide policy about HIPAA and Research.
This latest version reflects the first updates to the policy since 2013. Extensive revisions were made throughout, in an attempt to clarify certain HIPAA requirements and to update to current practices. We won’t list all the changes here, but some key points are:
–Updates the definition of “research” to better match the definition the UAMS IRB uses.
–Updates the process to certify the use of PHI in research that involves only deceased individuals.
–Adds a new section about recruiting and contacting research participants.
If you have trouble accessing the revised policy via the link, you can search for it on the UAMS Administrative Guide website. It’s policy 2.1.12, titled HIPAA Research Policy.
