Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), upon whom we rely for updates in the world of human subject protections, has come through again with a recap of how the delay in the implementation of the revised Common Rule affects us here on the ground. Some highlights worth mentioning:
- The current Common Rule requirements described at 45 CFR 46 and which guided UAMS IRB policy development will remain in place trhough at least July 19, 2018.
- Institutions can choose to implement any aspects of the proposed Common Rule that do not conflict with the current Common Rule. Note that institutions have always had the option of requiring things that federal regulations don’t require, as long as institutional policies don’t conflict with federal regulations.
The above link will take you to PRIM&R’s Focus on the Revised Common Rule website, from where you can navigate to the one-page summary. The summary link is, as of this writing, in the “Latest News” box at the top of the page. The website is also frequently updated with news and resources to help us all get familiar with the revised rule.
