A recent Washington Post article and podcast got us started looking around for more information about the notorious Tuskegee experiment, which, according to the Post author, “destroyed the trust many African Americans held for medical institutions — a legacy that persists today.”
Clicking around the internet for more information led us to an American Scholar story about Tuskegee whistleblower Peter Buxton, who finally wound up contacting a reporter when his attempts to alert the government about the study’s major ethical flaws went nowhere. This article also addresses the relative scarcity of whistleblowers in medical fields. Despite promises of protection, whistleblowers have often felt negative repercussions of reporting improper activities.
We encourage you to take a look at both articles.
