Investigators studying non-English speaking populations usually plan ahead and get any documents subjects will see translated before the study begins. The IRB sometimes receive new submissions with study documents already submitted in both English and the language of interest. While the IRB will eventually need to see both versions, it may save you some time/hassle to wait until your English documents are approved before getting them translated. That way the translations only need to be done once. As you probably know, the IRB may require changes to study documents, or it may suggest you eliminate or completely rewrite some documents altogether. If you’ve already translated your unapproved documents, you’ve just doubled the amount of work you’ll have to do to meet those contingencies. So please submit just your English versions with your original submission. If the IRB needs to see your translated documents during the initial review, we’ll let you know. Otherwise, consider waiting until your study is approved before investing in translation.
