Single IRB (sIRB) review, in which a single IRB acts as the reviewing IRB for all sites involved in a multisite study, was intended to simplify the IRB review process and eliminate having to deal with multiple IRBs’ requirements on a single study. A recent article in Journal of Clinical and Translational Science summarizes the proceedings of a workshop intended to gather opinions about sIRB review. (Disclaimer: The UAMS IRB director was a workshop participant.) The paper reports that while the sIRB concept has promise, its implementation so far has posed several challenges. We hope that those of you working on sIRB studies will take the time to read the article.
