What is CITI training?
All research staff are required to have current basic human subject protection training through the CITI program to be able to interact with human subjects or access identifiable human subject material. One of either the basic biomedical and the basic social/behavioral training courses must be completed to meet this requirement. Note that other education requirements may be imposed by other entities. However, only the basic biomedical or social/behavioral training will meet the IRB’s requirements.
How often must I complete CITI training?
CITI training must be renewed every three years. After initial completion, the next two renewals can be completed through a brief refresher course accessible via CITI. The full course must be retaken for the third renewal.
How do I access CITI training?
To access CITI training, please go to CITIprogram.org and create an account. Once logged in, affiliate with either the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) or the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute, depending on where you’re based. Also, please be careful to affiliate with UAMS and not UA Little Rock or UA Fayetteville.
When you create your CITI account, please use the same email address you used to create your CLARA account. CLARA and CITI talk to each other electronically, and CLARA will automatically update to reflect your CITI training status if your accounts match.
Will my CITI training from my previous institution suffice for the UAMS IRB?
If you are new to UAMS and have current CITI training from a previous institution, please send the IRB office a copy of your current completion certificate to irb@uams.edu. We will review the course content and see if it is equivalent to what UAMS requires. If so, you may not have to take the UAMS course until your current training expires.
